Leadership Practices InventoryOver three million people have used The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) as a first step to reaching their personal leadership best, clearly demonstrating what three decades of ongoing research affirms: that leadership is a practice that can be taught and learned by anyone. Effective leadership is not an inborn skill available to a select few. Rather it is a set of observable behaviors that, with deliberate practice, can help everyone be more effective and make more of a positive difference in the workplace, in the community, in the world.

With the right feedback and tools, anyone can learn to be an effective leader. Through self-discovery and increased self-awareness we discover our strengths. And through personal reflection and analysis of our own behaviors we can clearly assess where we are along our leadership journey and what it will take to get us to where we want to go. Equally as valuable is insight and feedback from those around us who know us well, who have experience of us in our role as a leader, and who can provide honest input into the behaviors we exhibit to others. Combined, these essential perspectives provide invaluable insight into how we view ourselves as a leader, how others view us, and what actions we can take to improve our effectiveness.

The Leadership Practices Inventory is a questionnaire that contains 30 behavioral statements—six for each of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®—and takes 10 to 20 minutes to complete. Leaders and individuals complete the LPI Self, rating themselves on the frequency with which they believe they engage in each of the 30 behaviors. Five to ten other people—typically selected by the leaders—complete the LPI 360 Observer, indicating the frequency with which they think the leader engages in each behavior.

How Was LPI Verified and Tested?

 There is considerable empirical support for the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership framework. Here we provide an overview of the development and validation of the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). Comparisons of LPI scores along a number of critical dimensions are summarized, as well as brief insights into findings by other researchers utilizing this leadership framework and instrument. LPI  delivers results that enable the leader to gain insight into their current leadership benchmark, or compare results over multiple assessments to gauge development. The LPI and Five Practices can be mapped to any mission or vision statement. It has been shown to adapt to any organization’s leadership development program.

The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) was developed through a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative research methods and studies. In-depth interviews and written case studies from personal-best leadership experiences generated the conceptual framework, which consists of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®:

  • Inspire a Shared Vision
  • Challenge the Process
  • Enable Others to Act
  • Encourage the Heart

The actions that make up these practices were translated into behavioral statements. Following several iterative psychometric processes, the assessments were created and administered to managers and non-managers across a variety of organizations, disciplines, and demographic backgrounds.
